The Best Whiskey Bars Around the SoMa

Whiskey is one of those beverages that can be both sophisticated and down-to-earth at the same time; it’s a lot like San Francisco that way. The best whiskey bars in SoMa pour the finest glasses of the brown stuff crafted in distilleries from Kentucky to Tokyo.

There’s nothing like a stiff drink to loosen you up. Let’s tour the best whiskey in The City.

83 PROOF

83 Proof is just the kind of hidden gem that makes San Francisco’s nightlife so interesting. This cozy little establishment is unmarked, so you’ll have to know where to find it or else your uber driver may blow right by. The mixed wood interior is lit by dangling glass chandeliers. But don’t let that intimidate you. TimeOut San Francisco describes the vibe as “young, unpretentious and celebratory.”

As for the drinks, TimeOut recommends the Nikka 12-year single malt whiskey.

RICKHOUSE

Rickhouse takes its whiskey seriously. Named for the storage space where they keep whiskey barrels during the aging process, Rickhouse has the look, feel and even the smell of the place where fine whiskey is poured. Thrillist raves about the place, calling it “one of the best places in the city for an after-work whiskey drink, especially if you can get a seat at the bar.”

They take their design and sense of San Francisco history just as seriously as the drinks at Rickhouse. The interior was inspired and built from old whiskey barrels, staves and original charred brick from before the 1906 quake. Rickhouse creates a fun, convivial atmosphere for a happy hour bracer.

LOCAL EDITION

Extra! Read all about it! Local Edition is sequestered in the depths of the old Hearst Building. They borrow their atmosphere from the golden age of the newspaper. Let’s call it a “speakeasy” with newsprint on its fingers.

Yelper Barbara F. was impressed with the place on a recent visit to San Francisco. In her 4-star review, she says, “They have a big cocktail menu and hubby loved the whiskey. Ambience is great here with good music.”

When a brisk fog rolls in off the Bay, warm your insides with a glass of top-shelf whiskey from the best in SoMa, San Francisco!
