Best Places to Ice Skate Around SoMa
Our world has become a lot colder – ‘tis the season! – so we’re looking at fun things to do outside. Of course, the first thing that leaps to mind is ice skating; whizzing around the ice, falling over and picking yourself right back up again, dancing, jumping – and laughing. So where are the best places to ice skate around SoMa? We thought you’d never ask.
Have you ever been over to Yerba Buena Ice Skating & Bowling Center? There’s a nice irony to a place that allows you to bowl at ten pins and at the same time affords you the space to act like a ten pin yourself and fall over on ice. Open every day of the year and located at 750 Folsom Street, the center has an indoor facility to skate in (every day of the year, if you’re addicted!). They offer lessons along with public skating and figure skating. You can even join an ice Hockey league (or go to their school). Pretty much anything you can do on ice (in public, that’s legal) you can do here.
You can also check out the Holiday Ice Rink at Embarcadero Center at 4 Embarcadero Center in the Financial District. It houses the largest outdoor Ice Rink in the Bay Area and is beset with shops and restaurants. Open Nov3- Jan7, prices run around $12 per ticket (kids 8 and under are $7) and skate rentals are $5. They also do group rate events if you want to throw an ice skating holiday party!
Ice Skating can also be found in Union Square Park starting on Nov 1 (and ending Jan 15). Sponsored this year by Alaska Airlines, you can skate till your heart’s content surrounded by holiday lights and the surrounding park as it’s all outdoors. It’s a very picturesque place to skate, over by the huge Holiday tree, and runs daily from 10am-11:30pm. General admission costs $18, children 8 and under are $13 and locker rental runs $3.
So get out there and break a leg! Wait. No. Scratch that. DON’T break a leg – just have fun – very safe fun – skating around SoMa!
