With the weather finally warming up, it is time to get out and start enjoying the sun. While parks and other outdoor activities are great, going to the beach is a true event of the summer season. Living so close to the coastline means there are many beaches within a road trip’s reach, however, there are also some great beaches close to SoMa!

Baker Beach

This gorgeous beach offers amazing ocean views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the Marin Headlands. Even though large waves and strong rip currents make the water unsafe for swimming, it is still a beautiful place for hanging out and picnicking. If you are hungry during your beach trip, there are also lots of cafes in the nearby areas of the Richmond District along Clement Street! It is also nice to hike on the Coastal Trail on the cliffside of the beach. Be sure to remember that the north side of Baker Beach is “clothing optional” and is often frequented by nude sunbathers!

China Beach

If you want to beat the crowds of Baker Beach, then head to China Beach, they tiny sheltered cove between Lands End and Baker Beach. The views of the Marin Headlands and Golden Gate Bridge are just as Instagram-worthy as Baker Beach, and during low tide, you can sometimes take a nice stroll between the two. Above the beach, there’s a picnic area with grills for you to cook up a delicious meal, but remember that there are no dogs are allowed!

Ocean Beach

The city’s largest and most popular beach is also one of its most dangerous since it is full of riptides. However, the sands and scene are wonderful and best of all, sunbathers can enjoy a bonfire in the fire pits when nighttime rolls around. This place is a perfect spot to spend all day and night!

What is better than lounging on the sand underneath the summer sun? These beaches are great to pack a picnic and spend all day enjoying the season, or just for a quick trip for a beautiful sundown!
