Beat the Summer Heat in San Francisco
It’s Summer. It’s hot. It’s sticky. Let’s face it, as beautiful as summer in San Francisco can be, some days are just too hot to handle. Here are a few places you can go to get out of the hot sun and still have Summer fun.
Napa Wine Caves
If you’ve ever thought the only thing missing from caves is wine, head up to Napa Valley to combine the two. Many vineyards in the Valley have large cave systems which house their wine stock and are available for tours and tastings. And due to being underground, the temperature is pretty well regulated and will keep you nice and cool despite the blazing sun outside. Some caves, such as at Schramsberg Vineyards, date all the way back 150 years. Some, like Bella Vineyards, are much newer. Either way, it is a ton of fun to explore these subterranean cave networks with a glass of vino in hand! Many require reservations, so be sure to book in advance.
Catch a Movie
Going to the movies has been a method to cool off for decades. And for good reason. If you’re going to sit in a large air-conditioned room with strangers just to avoid heat stroke, it may as well come with entertainment. Head to the cinemas and you can spend a couple hours in another world, totally forgetting the stifling heat outside. For small release movies and independent pictures, head to Landmark’s Embarcadero Center Cinema. Here you can see limited run movies and documentaries, like the biographical movie on Mr. Rogers, “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?”
Take a Swim
There’s no more classic way to cool off in summer than a dip in a cool pool. San Francisco has no shortage of clubs, fitness centers, and aquatic centers to help you get out of the heat and into the water. Try the rooftop pool at the Mission Bay UCSF campus. It is open to the community, and they offer lessons for those who haven’t learned to swim yet. The Mission Bay Outdoor Pool has been rated the best poll by SF Magazine 2 years in a row. And there are always trained lifeguards on duty, so you can feel safe while you take a plunge.
We All Scream for Ice Cream
Ice cream and summer go together like peanut butter and jelly… Penn and Teller… Santa and long mall lines. So when the heat gets unbearable, head to an ice cream parlor to cool down. Indulge in a rich, creamy gelato at Coletta Gelato for a taste of the Mediterranean. For a sampling of San Francisco’s own resident ice cream weirdness, go to Humphry Slocombe. They pride themselves in creating ice cream flavors that, to the rational foodie, should not exist. Indulge in a sweet Hibiscus Beet Sorbet or the best seller, the Secret Breakfast. The latter is made with bourbon and cornflakes. Cool down, eat ice cream, get a buzz going from the bourbon. It checks every box. When the thermometer starts reaching an ungodly number, try one of these options to stay cool.
